Since we're getting into oil painting some people may want to invest in some of their own art materials eg good brushes and various mediums. Here is a list of good art supply shops I have used in and around London. Feel free to add to it with your favourite!
General:
CASSart: everyone probably knows this already, ask for a student discount card (need to show student ID or course registration doc) to get 10% off full priced items. There are 6 shops in London (all open on Sundays), and they run regular introductory workshops on drawing, painting, printmaking and photography so keep an eye out, here. The Islington branch has good oil paints (eg Old Holland, Michael Harding) and special discount evenings sometimes.
Limited stock for online shopping.
Beautiful old-fashioned fine art artist materials shop in the West End and a short walk from City Lit (105 Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3RY). Highly recommended
They have pretty much everything you might need/want/drool over. They stock a good range of the Roberson&Co's materials, who does a range of cheaper end of Charles oils, while no where near as good as the big name brands, but are better than most student grade paints.
No student discount though, boohoo!
Online catalogue here: http://www.cornelissen.com/onlinecatalog/index.html
4 branches in London, one in Covent Garden (16-18 Shelton Street,
Covent Garden,London.WC2H 9JL, opens Sundays) Stocks a wider range of materials including graphical art, model making and specialist studio equipments. Can order online and pickup instore the next day. Student discount 15%, but ask for their own 15% discount card by signing up, which can sometimes workout cheaper than CASS.
Atlantis Art: warehouse like shop in Islington, Britannia House 68-80 Hanbury Street London E1 5JL
Last time I went, there were not as much stock as I expected from their online catalogue here.
No discounts (I think)
Printing
9 Playhouse Court
62 Southwark Bridge Road
London, SE1 0AT
Mon Friday Saturday
10am to 6pm 11am to 4pm
Stocks a good range of knives, plates, paper and printing inks, I have used their Caligo Safewash inks which is oil based but washes off with washing up liquid, much better than water-based. Would be happy to split larger quantity of supplies (eg packs of Lino, driers/extenders etc). No discount (why is this happening?!)
