Experimental drawing project This SAT MAY 31ST 2014

Drawing project Fine Art Course year 1, Sat 31/5 and 5/6.Tutors Tony Hull/ Chris Hough

RationaleTransformation

In year 2 of the fine art course you will be asked to a personal project and we aim to fully support you in working in your chosen media.  One of the most important elements in developing a project is the ability to take an idea, subject or motif through different stages and through the process of transformation, open up new insights and possibilities for both yourself as artist researcher and for your audience in terms of how you capture their imagination and share your thought process.
This is the first of two drawing projects led by Tony this term, which aim to help you use drawing as a way of examining how you respond to a given subject and how through developed strategies in drawing, you can open up new perspectives on everyday experience.

Areas we will cover include:

Sensory interpretation.
Mark, pace and manipulating the image surface.
Transformation of scale and perspective.

You do not need to come with anything prepared , there will be a short presentation at 10.00AM and be prepared to follow the fast moving intuitive work you have done in 3d with Amanda .

Supporting Materials

The presentation consisted of work visualisation diagrams, collected by American Author Edward Tufte. Probably one of the best living authors on how people make abstract concepts visual.
Look him up also on you tube. [Lecture titled "Pen and Parchment: Drawing in the Middle Ages"] - Ed

A great mini-series by the BBC: link-->The Story of Women and Art...available on iPlayer for 7 more days.

Amsterdam...?

* Updated by Wei... Flights are still  quite cheap in July, via Easyjet, so would just need to find a cheap B&B (this is harder to find)

B&B Alexander, Amsterdam

Alexander Boersstraat 15, Amsterdam (it's very close to the Van Gogh Museum, ~£85/night twin room)

Anybody want to visit the newly opened Van Gogh museum?

I would like to visit because there's a Vallotton exhibition on until June 14 - not so much for his paintings, but he's my printmaking hero.

Check out these woodcuts...

Board of Studies meeting about exhibition

We went to the meeting on Tuesday and gave feedback to Chris and the other tutors about this term.

This meeting was mainly for Year 2 to discuss and plan for the end of year exhibition at Espacio Gallery, which is the the first time the Fine Art course have held it outside City Lit.

Things for us to keep in mind for this time next year...

The schedule for planning begins around 3rd June and the final exhibition take down is 22nd July.

The private view is on 17th July and the show is on for 5 days.

There is also a corridor show at City Lit which is hung 5 days before the Espacio exhibition.  This is on for 3 weeks.

Some of the jobs that will need to be assigned:
  • Editorial/proof-reading of publicity materials
  • Design and creation of a programme (if it contains the City Lit logo, the City Lit marketing department will get involved in publicity)
  • Social media
  • Curatorial groups - Chris said this class time would be scheduled for this
  • A group of 8/10 students to hang the show
  • Labelling
  • A barman - the gallery can provide, or students can sign up to a rota
  • Invigilators for the 5 days of the exhibition - Chris suggested a rota of at least 3 people at a time for safety.
  • Running the visa card machine
  • Transport of work home at the end of the show (there is no storage for work at City Lit.)
Some of the Year Twos asked about selling work, Chris said we could talk about pricing work in class.

He advised not to sell work at a low price if it is your best work, as it could be exhibited again.

Tony said not to feel anxious about the show and not to see it as the end, but as the beginning. He also advised that people should make a good website, so that visitors have more access to your work. Chris said advice about websites will be scheduled into class time.

Art supply shops in London (central)

Dear all:

Since we're getting into oil painting some people may want to invest in some of their own art materials eg good brushes and various mediums. Here is a list of good art supply shops I have used in and around London. Feel free to add to it with your favourite!

General:

CASSart: everyone probably knows this already, ask for a student discount card (need to show student ID or course registration doc) to get 10% off full priced items. There are 6 shops in London (all open on Sundays), and they run regular introductory workshops on drawing, painting, printmaking and photography so keep an eye out, here.

The Islington branch has good oil paints (eg Old Holland, Michael Harding) and special discount evenings sometimes.

Limited stock for online shopping.
